Bushcraft
Learn essential outdoor skills in our woodland
About Bushcraft
Our bushcraft sessions take groups into the woodland to learn traditional outdoor skills. From fire lighting and shelter building to foraging and tool use, bushcraft sessions connect participants with the natural world and develop practical problem-solving skills. Ideal for Scouts, Duke of Edinburgh groups, and school residentials.
Session Details
Key Features
During the session participants learn fire lighting using traditional methods including flint and steel, and practise shelter construction from natural woodland materials. There is an introduction to wild plant identification and basic foraging awareness, alongside age-appropriate tool use — including safe knife and saw skills where suitable. Navigation awareness and nature observation are woven throughout, and all activities are led by experienced, qualified instructors who ensure the session is both safe and genuinely exciting for every group.
Badge and Programme Links
Bushcraft is one of the most badge-rich activities on the programme. Cubs can work directly towards the Backwoods Cooking Activity Badge, with fire-lighting, ember cooking and camp skills all built into the session. Beavers gain hands-on experience towards the Camp Craft Activity Badge, while Scouts and Explorers build evidence for the Naturalist Activity Badge through woodland observation and ecology. Every residential visit counts towards the Nights Away Staged Activity Badge across all sections. For Girlguiding members, it's a natural fit for the Land Adventure Badge. DofE participants can log bushcraft as a Skills section activity with sustained practice, and it delivers the National Curriculum's statutory KS2, KS3 and KS4 PE requirement for outdoor and adventurous activities that challenge pupils physically and intellectually. Beyond badges, young people return home with real independence, self-reliance and a can-do attitude that leaders and teachers notice immediately.
