Jacob's Ladder
Work as a team, tackle each giant rung, and discover how far cooperation can take you.
About Jacob's Ladder
Jacob’s Ladder is a challenge that’s all about teamwork, communication, and determination. As you and your partner climb the oversized swinging rungs, you’ll quickly realise that every step upward takes coordination, trust, and a good sense of humour. Each level becomes a little trickier, encouraging you to problem‑solve, support one another, and celebrate every bit of progress. Whether you reach the very top or simply climb higher than you expected, this activity builds confidence, resilience, and unforgettable shared achievement.

Key Features
Pairs or small teams climb together wearing full harnesses with overhead belay throughout, and the structure is designed so that success is genuinely impossible without active cooperation — one person simply cannot make it to the top alone. As the rungs get further apart with height, the physical challenge intensifies and the need for clear communication and mutual physical support becomes critical. Instructors facilitate a powerful debrief that connects the experience directly to teamwork principles, and the activity works across a broad range of abilities precisely because the challenge is collaborative rather than individual.
Badge and Programme Links
Jacob's Ladder is one of Beaudesert's most iconic team challenges — and it's name-checked on the Girlguiding website itself. The Height Adventure Badge page explicitly lists Jacob's Ladder as an example activity for Rangers earning the badge — a direct, confirmed reference from girlguiding.org.uk. For Scouts, it falls within the Climber Activity Badge alternative pathway, which confirms high ropes and climbing-like activities as qualifying routes. DofE participants gain physical challenge relevant to the Physical section and teamwork skills applicable to Expedition preparation. Schools deliver the KS2–KS4 OAA requirement for activities presenting intellectual and physical challenges that build trust and problem-solving skills. The cooperative nature of the climb — you go further together than you ever would alone — makes it one of the most powerful team development tools on the programme.
Activity Information
There is no formal NGB for Jacob's Ladder. The activity is operated under a comprehensive Site Operating Procedure with instructors working through strict internal training and sign-off with some holding NGB qualifications.. All rigging and harness equipment meets EN standards.
Why should you book with us?
Jacob's Ladder produces some of the most powerful moments of collaborative achievement we witness. When a pair finally hauls themselves onto the top rung together — breathless, laughing, and genuinely proud — they have experienced something that no classroom exercise or team meeting could replicate.
All sessions are led by experienced, qualified instructors who understand how to work with groups of all ages and abilities.
